This series of restoration pictures will show some of
the extensive coachwork and restoration on a 1935 Packard 1204
Dietrich Convertible Sedan Super 8. This is a rather rare car,
fewer than 25 were made. We were originally contracted to perform
body and paint restoration on this elegant car after disappointing
workmanship at other shops.
A 'restorer' had dismantled the car then subcontracted a renowned
panel beater (body panel fabricator and metal finisher) to perform
the rust patching and metal finishing. The car was then sent
on to a paint shop. The car body was placed on a rolling jig
prior to transport to the metal man. The jig also simplified
movement about the paint shop. The painter would prime and sand
but the body lines seemed to change when they moved it. They
tried to create better body lines by continually adding plastic
filler over primer to all the edges. Each time it was moved around
the lines again didn't match so more plastic filler was applied.
The owner decided enough was enough and brought the body and
sheet metal to us. We realized rather quickly that there was
nothing to be saved from the work done by the metal man or the
painter and the body was stripped back down to bare metal. We
will show you some interesting photos taken at various stages
of the project, mostly of the coachwork and then where we picked
up reassembly.
